The IIT JEE 2006 was scheduled on the 9th of April. With hefty changes in the pattern, this new avatar of the JEE was welcomed by all and sundry. Until Jan-06 I was almost fully geared to tackle the JEE, but then selection in the NDA and the SSB interview, BOARD practicals simply took me away from it. These swallowed Feb, and then was the time for the Board –exams. I was almost decided that I’ll start preparing for the JEE from the first hour of 24th March (23rd was the last exam—comp science) But if every thing could go as decided, then we would all have been millionaires. I don’t remember what might have had happened that day but surely I didn’t had the best of the study periods until April 1st. Anyways I believe the blog was supposed to be upon JEE……… allow me to concentrate ……….Alright, there was no tension _-_ even the night before the JEE I watched the movie, “Maine Gandhi ko nahi mara”-(Hindi—it means ‘I didn’t kill Gandhi’). The central character of the movie was a patient suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, who forgets all his present and starts believing that he had killed Gandhi. It was a nice and touching script……….Hell, why can’t I just concentrate upon JEEAmmm…... Lets give it another tryApril 9, 2006It was decided that I’ll go with Gaurav on his Army- vehicle and I guess there’s no point in mentioning what had happened during the journey. We were there 15 mins before the scheduled time of starting. Upon reaching the gate we were instructed to leave our bags outside the centre. Now we had no place to keep the bag, the car was already gone. Now the IITian (future IITian rather) came into play, Gaurav had an idea. He pleaded with the shopkeepers who refused to take custody of the bag reasoning that they already had enough of them. This gave us some confidence that there were others like us too ( also a feeling that there many (future) IITians in the center already …hmm)When we were back at the gates I realized that I had left my Admit Card in the bag itself and now with just a minute or two to go I had to rush not only to fetch my Admit Card, but also to get to my testing seat crossing the sprawling campus of the College( our test centre). The paper(Physics Exam) went fine but the only disappointment was that the topics I was weak at were holding a larger proportion. I had finished the paper with surprisingly about half an hour to go ( I should mention that I had not attempted the whole of the question paper). Half an hour more ………. And I never felt like going through the remaining portion so I turned onto to the instructions page where I found another surprising feature there were a few questions that carried NO negative marks,,,, so I started attempting those questions furiously. The paper was over and now we were left with two consuming hours to spare until the next part of the exam would start. I, Gaurav and Neeraj(a school pal) hooked up together and spent all our time in a refreshment shop, chewing snacks and munching sweets. I didn’t eat much……. This was quite beneficial while the two were sleepy and drowsy during the Mathematics Exam( the paper was tough - it really tested a student’s skills). Yet again we were left with another two hours to spare. This was the time to finish the tiffin I was carrying.Chemistry was to follow…………….Overall I got to realize the new dimensions of this ever competitive exam. The new pattern had enwrapped the ‘old JEE screening’ thing as well as a part of the ‘Mains’.A brief review of the Question papersCHEMISTRY : It was quite evenly poised –i.e. Physical, organic and inorganic had their regular stacks and none was over-emphasized.MATHEMATICS : This was a decent paper wherein Calculus and Geometry were on the up whereas other sections could not command their proportion..PHYSICS : Although I was unable to observe the Question paper completely, yet a significant thing to observe were the Two questions which involved lab-lectures.
Thursday : CBSE XII Computer ExamI hadn’t a nap this time either, courtesy Links, Stacks and queues. Why these and not the rest - because we had never done them at school <infact a significant part of the syllabus was never touched upon at school - Because::: we had a frequent change in the computer faculty.... and spent a lot of time without a teacher> . Anyways the C++ part of the paper seemed to be hell; I lost all my nerves seeing the first question ‘Name the header file associated with “pow” ’ . I could not make it out. I was perplexed and then it struck my dumb head to start things off with SQL, Boolean and Networking. It worked, I gained a bit of confidence and then switched over to c++. Surprisingly pow seemed to be power and I was on top of the world. Moving further with C++ I lost all what I had gained so far, the question on links got the better of me and I guess I did lose the battle.Party planning and merry making … all the way now
Friday: CBSE XII Chemistry ExamI could not have a nap this time too, because of the arguing BIOMOLECULES and Coordinate Chemistry. And yet again the same sequence of events took place( if the question 'Which series of events? ' comes into ur head please scroll down the page and read about the ENGLISH EXAM). The paper was easy, but how can I do everything absolutely correctly. Besides the fact that there were a couple of questions which had caught me totally unaware, I had committed a blunder. Molecular mass of Urea, even a kid could have got that right but how can I ? I took 120 grams in place of 60 grams. On the return journey while everyone was celebrating and planning parties a few including me could not be a part of the cadre since we had another exam – computer science.
Saturday: CBSE XII Mathematics ExamWell this time I had some real good sleep for I was quite confident about Mathematics, my favorite subject. Things in the morning went as usual. The paper was also a simple one. I had completed the whole paper except one question while 20 minutes were still left… this one question: 'wow', I now wonder, "what wonders did it have that I wasn’t able to crack it"… Although finally I was able to crack it but not fully, my stupid self had made an error by committing a rather stupid mistake. The question : Integrate [{(tanx)^1/2}dx]And also I hadn’t done my best in the rest of the paper; in another question I had taken g=10 instead of 9.8m/s-2 which left me with an answer in – sine inverse- instead of a simple answer 90ยบ. Well the paper didn’t go as expected but one doesn’t get everything in life yeh... soothing words ….but why does it always happens to me…..?
Saturday: CBSE XII Physics ExamI hadn’t had any sleep because of the haunting optics which I had been doing since Thursday but finally I was getting hold of the things that I had been leaving ever since they were taught. Any ways, I was confident of having a good paper. Nothing much changed; it was a complete copy of the scene of Wednesday with Akash’s horn, the ‘peda’, the ‘tilak’ the buses, the center, the hall, but for one thing, 'the question paper'. This time the revolt of the heart had an edge. The horror of Physics ended just on time(actually a few seconds after the time was called) Just about everyone unhappy about how things went, every one felt that it was a long one. What I feel is that if everyone(including me) had seriously done their paper i.e. by avoiding all speculations of peeping here and there or trying to become Teresa or just going around asking those questions which you otherwise won’t have asked others. After the paper, the worst thing I find, is the enquiring teachers - that wait for you back at school… 'How was the paper son?' 'What happened ….'> and kids discussing… 'oh man!!! We did the same question on the bus or the question paper was almost a Xerox-copy of one of the sample papers that I had solved' …When you haven’t had the best of papers the time-slag between, the end of the paper and the time you reach home, is almost eternity, you feel like why the hell didn’t I put in time on this topic, why did I underestimate blah..blah topic. To be straight you feel disastrous when you don’t have the same kind of paper as others have had.The paper was easy...but I screwed it up
CBSE XII English examI hadn’t had the best of sleep, for I was awake till 2’o clock in the morning (contrary to the doctor’s advice –‘Sleep well before the D-day (exam)) 'Was it due to anxiety?' I don’t know. But there was a sudden urge in me to go through the Back-exercise of the NCERT book. I hadn’t ever opened these pages (except while turning the pages while switching between chapters)It was 8:07am and Akash was here blowing the horns of his patience(actually his motor bike) As he waited downstairs on his bike for me. Mama and papa blessed me and gave me a ‘peda’ (a sweet-dish) dipped in yoghurt [traditional--- when you are going out for an exam].Traditions didn’t end at home, school was even more traditionally-tre(n)dy. Each student was bid farewell and the best of luck (because our examination centre was at least 15 miles away and only one of our teachers could go with us) between the ceremonial ‘tilak’ ceremony ( again a tradition - some ‘roli’ a red dye and/or sandalwood paste is applied on the forehead to wish a good beginning) All this ended up when all of us were packed into 2 school buses. All the fear that had grown up all this while sort of vanished away when we reached the center. As we entered the examination hall the heart started thumping and as if inspired by the poem ‘Freedom’ by Rabindranath Tagore it was all set to break the shackles of my rib cage. The question paper was presented to us, this suppressed the struggle of the heart to break free. I sailed through Section ‘C’ (the literature part) in 75 minutes and the only problem was the reaction of Lady Brecknell to Ernest’s story (from the story ‘The Importance of Being Ernest’ by Oscar Wilde). Then I switched over to section B i.e. the writing section through which I glided in an hour, only to find myself helpless because of the floods in Europe. This was the note-making paragraph which dealt with the climatic overhaul in Europe. Besides note-making, section A i.e. the reading part had the comprehension which was about the recent industrial revolution in India.I guess all of us had a jolly of a time giving this paper
